Where Foundation Requests Are Accepted

Our home base is Durham, the Durham County seat. The 2020 Census counted 283,506 people in the city, spread over about 112.79 square miles of land, and 324,833 in the county as a whole, which the Census Bureau estimated at 347,240 in July 2025. We take requests from inside city limits and from unincorporated Durham County alike. The Durham City-County Building & Safety Department handles building permits for both.

Beyond the county line, five more places send requests: Roxboro, NC to the north, Oxford, NC to the northeast, Wake Forest, NC to the east, and Mebane, NC and Graham, NC (Alamance County) to the west. Each is its own city or town in another county, with its own permit office and its own steps. Distances below are straight-line estimates from Durham City Hall, not road miles.

All Covered Communities

Each town page covers local housing, soil notes, permit steps and common questions. Here is the list, with the office that handles building permits in each place.

  • Durham, NC and Durham County. The City of Durham and unincorporated Durham County, described on our homepage. Permits come from the Durham City-County Building & Safety Department.
  • Roxboro, NC (Person County). About 28 miles north, the Person County seat. Inside city limits, start with the City of Roxboro's zoning office, then Person County Building Inspections; confirm the County handles your address.
  • Oxford, NC (Granville County). About 28 miles northeast, the Granville County seat. Permits take two steps: City of Oxford Zoning first, then Granville County Inspections.
  • Wake Forest, NC (Wake County, with a part in Franklin County). About 22 miles east. Permits go through the Town of Wake Forest Building Permits/Inspections; in the Franklin County part, confirm which office handles your address.
  • Mebane, NC (Alamance County). About 22 miles west-northwest, with two small slivers in Orange County. Permits go through the City of Mebane Inspections & Planning Department; Orange County addresses should confirm with Orange County Planning & Inspections.
  • Graham, NC (Alamance County). About 28 miles west, the Alamance County seat. Permits go through the City of Graham Inspections Department.

In all six places the same state rule applies: North Carolina lets many smaller home projects skip a building permit, but not repairs to the parts that hold the house up, and the foundation is one of them. Ask the specialist who will apply.

Ask About Coverage for Your Address

City limits and county lines are hard to spot from the street. If the checker gives no clear answer, or your home sits just outside one of these towns, send the estimate form anyway and name the nearest town. You can also ask through the contact form. We will let you know whether the address falls inside our service area.
